We’re heading up to Whidbey Island for a few days of R & R, and I didn’t want to end on a slightly panicky, lead-in-dirt-related note. So here’s a shot of a neighbor’s magnolia tree. It seems to bloom once very heavily in the spring and again more lightly in August, and my daughter and I both enjoy picking up the dropped petals and doing that crack-and-peel thing with their bases that is just so strangely satisfying. I’m sorry not to know the name of the tree variety, but it’s truly lovely.
Happy late-summer gardening!
