Gardening where the sidewalk ends

Ski Trellis September 21, 2008

This has got to be one of the niftiest, most creative ideas for repurposing something old and worn-out into a useful garden structure. I used to walk by this in our old neighborhood, and made a trip back there yesterday to see if it was still there – and it was!

Ski Trellis

The gardeners, who have a wildly colorful Victorian-style house on a fairly busy Seattle street, complete with a chicken coop and a woodshed (very country-in-the-city), have turned their side parking strip into a raspberry patch with the help of two pair of old downhill skis, a few bolts, and some wire.

The skis are sunk into the ground on either side of a narrow bed, and each pair of skis has been drilled and bolted together at the top:

There are smaller holes drilled below the bolts, so that the wire could be threaded through, as shown here:

The look is whimsical and has never failed to make me smile when I pass it. It’s also super sturdy, I think it’s been there for at least 6 years and probably longer than that. Neighbors seem to respect the berries and not pick, as there were many still clinging to the vines even though the leaves are now showing their fall colors and getting ready to let go.

Do you have a favorite recycled/reused/repurposed thing you’ve used yourself or seen in someone else’s garden?

That is sure a creative way to recycle. I do not know if I am that good when it comes to looking at something and seeing an entirely new use for it like they did with those skis. I guess I need to try to think outside the box a little harder. πŸ˜‰

This is a great example of repurposing. We are constantly looking for ways to recycle and repurpose but nothing this creative. The closest we have come was using the building materials from the demolition of a house down the block. We used the concrete to bury around the border of our fence to create a barrier that our Shibaboyz couldn’t dig out of. Saved us a lot of money!

Thanks for showing us, as always, some new inspiration.

Very creative use of old skis. I repurpose a metal tv antenna into a trellis.

What a cool idea! We just so happen to have three pair of old skis in our garage and this might be just the ticket for recycling them.

    Cynthia –

I’m sure you’re more creative than you give yourself credit for. πŸ™‚ I’m not to great with that stuff myself but always admire other folks who are!

Your project sounds like a winner on all counts – repurposing, saving money, and DIY.

I hope you go for it – it seems like you could turn them into other garden things too, like a fence or arbor or ?? whatever your creative mind can come up with!
