Little windows of summer sky through my parents’ cherry tree:

Blue sky through cherry tree

Soon those leave will be a thing of the past. And the future, maybe, if they head to the compost pile. Wish we could bank the sun in the same fashion!

This has absolutely nothing to do with gardening – I just liked the way the kites seemed to be flying so companionably together. It was taken last week on one of the hottest days ever recorded in Seattle, around sunset at Golden Gardens beach, which was packed with folks in search of the slightest cool breeze.

Kite chase at Golden Gardens

Today is 7/8/09 by the UK/European (and other? just not US) reckoning. If you happen to read this before noonish, you can try to remind yourself to note the time at 12:34:56 (7.8.09) for some mild numeric amusement. If you want to take a photo at that moment and post it on your blog, VegPlotting, one of my UK garden blog cronies, is curious about what people are up to at that exact moment in time, worldwide. You can leave her a comment here and she’ll link to your post.

I took this from the ferry that runs between Vashon Island in Puget Sound and Seattle, WA. It looked like the sky had sprung a leak and the sun was shooting through. Since it was taking place over the water and the backlit Olympic Mountain range, it made for an enchanting ride home.

the clouds are leaking sun

Bald eagle in flight

Bald eagle flying over Douglas Fir tree near Seattle, WA last week. There were two eagles, one was being harassed by a crow and the other was just cruising around in circles. They nest near my parents’ house and usually announce their arrival with what my dad calls a “scream.” Pretty dramatic, and always exciting to witness these magnificent creatures as they return from the brink of extinction.

Head on over here to see what else is going on in the skies the world over this week.

I just can’t seem to resist putting a tree in my sky shots. I know there are plenty of great sky views with no trees in them, but I seem not to look up unless I’m examining branches, a canopy, leaves, twig-borne flower petals, or other arborific views.

Seattle Sky through trees, 3/17/09

Wispy clouds seen from below a giant monkey puzzle tree in Seattle, WA, USA.

My first one was a sky-through-trees pic too. Hm, a theme or just a lame coincidence? To see what the sky has been doing around the world this week, visit the Skywatch Friday site.

Happy Friday (and first day of spring for some of us)!

Skywatch Friday – My First One March 6, 2009

Moon over contorted filbert branches

(In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that this picture was actually taken earlier this week – I hope this doesn’t disqualify me from participating in the official SkyWatch Friday deal.)

I don’t take too many sky shots, but I noticed the moon rising while I was under my contorted filbert (Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick) attempting to prune out its straight suckers. It was an un-fun task that I did rather poorly, but at least I was rewarded by a glimpse of the moon’s pale face on a warm late-winter day.

Here in Seattle, the sky was clear and blue again today. It was frosty this morning, and an unseasonably late snow is predicted for tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I see it, but for now I’m happy to be taking in the sun, the moon, and the unclouded sky.

Happy Friday!
